The Vietnamese delegation to the Olympics 2008 has 53 members: 21 athletes and 32 officials, experts, coaches and doctors. Vietnam will participate in nine sports: Taekwondo, weightlifting, badminton, table-tennis, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, track and field and wushu.
This is the largest number of athletes Vietnam has yet sent to the games. However, Wushu is not considered an official sport, but a performance sport only.
The delegation that arrived in Beijing yesterday didn’t include Taekwondo, Wushu and table-tennis athletes because they will go to Beijing on August 15.
Eight athletes, namely gymnast Do Thi Ngan Thuong, shooter Nguyen Manh Tuong, runners Vu Thi Huong and Nguyen Dinh Cuong, weight-lifter Nguyen Thi Thiet, badminton players Nguyen Tien Minh and Le Ngoc Nguyen Nhung, and swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet, went to Beijing yesterday.
Weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan arrived in Beijing several days ago.
Speaking to correspondents before leaving Vietnam, sportsmen said they are proud to represent Vietnam at the world’s largest sports games and they promised to try their best to bring glory to the country.
Apart from weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan, the three Taekwondo artists Nguyen Van Hung, Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu, Tran Thi Ngoc Truc and female weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thiet are the hopes of Vietnam at the Olympics.
One day before the delegation left Vietnam, Chairman of the Water Sports Association, Pham Viet Muon, went to My Dinh Water Sport Centre to visit swimmer Huu Viet and presented Viet VND5 million ($295).
Since Vietnam first attended the Olympics in 1980, Vietnam has won only one silver medal, by Taekwondo artist Tran Hieu Ngan at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000.
