Paris-based studio AW² has designed the Six Senses Con Dao Resort in Vietnam.
Six Senses Con Dao Resort by AW²:
“The Six Senses Con Dao site is an amazing setting and certainly one of the most beautiful places on Con Dao Island. The beach, a one kilometre long strip of white sand with its dunes and turquoise sea, is surrounded by dark rocks, most prominent of which the Elephant Head Mountain, gliding into the sea, making it a most dramatic setting.
At the back of the site, the experience is completely different. Behind the sand dunes a river runs along close and shaded lush tropical vegetation, a mangrove, like an oasis between white sand and dark forest.
These natural settings give an extraordinary sense of nature a feeling of remoteness, of a secluded and private site, unique with its preserved natural landscape. It is a place to escape, to relax and to live close to the natural elements.
Our main concern at the start of the project was how to deal with these wonderful pre-existing conditions without destroying the essence of the site and give a real identity to the resort?
This implied that ecology and sustainability issues were foremost in our design inception: for the guests resort experience we had to preserve this feel of nature and for us, the architects, we had to commit to respect the site with an appropriate design. This meant that our design would imply for us to be very sensitive about every environmental aspect of the project: impact on site and nature, water, energy…
The concept of the Six Senses Con Dao is to enhance the natural local setting with its main features, to design all buildings and circulations in term of scale and texture to fit within the existing environment and to provide beautiful views and a permanent discovery of the landscape.
We want the resort to achieve a feel of luxury at ‘the end of the world’, where both exclusivity and environment are joined into one unforgettable guest experience.
The main arrival is located at high level and over the river. It takes you into a series of timber frame buildings organised in three public areas: the market area, the restaurant area, the swimming pool and its bar organised on terraces over the beach and the river leading to the main wooden bridge into the rolling sand dunes with the villas and to the mangrove spa.
Pedestrian bridges are linking all the areas with each other. Guests take the bridge above the river bed which flows down from the mountain to the sea, to go to the restaurant or to come back to their villa.
This is one of the major features of the resort, as it creates both a beautiful promenade and a stunning vantage point.
Arriving from the Welcome Sala (reception), the market area is the first public area of the resort; it is here that guests get their first the sense of the destination. The Market area is organised as a small village with a main street and its square.
On the right side against the falling rocks, small buildings (shops, offices…) are a reinterpretation of the traditional shape of the Vietnamese house with 2 pitches shingle roof, one building linked to another as we may find them in the village on countryside. The walls of the public buildings are clad in old Vietnamese doors. This is a clear statement made both environmentally in terms of re-use of discarded construction materials but also to give a sense of place. The end result is a stunning arrangement of buildings, which carry the mark of history of a vernacular Vietnamese architecture.
The slightly irregular alignment of small houses is creating the background of the resort in this area.
On the left side, roofs are lower, flatter (butterfly roof or single pitch). Terraces between the buildings (library, main bar…) provide views on the beach and invite the guests to linger and stay for a snack or a drink or just enjoy the setting.
The Restaurant area is located close to the beach. It is built on the sand dunes, located between sea and river, imbedded in the landscape. The widely spread decking is oriented to give marvellous views across to the islands and the river. The idea of this area is to provide each time the guest come a new experience of dining with varying vistas and different kinds of seating (daybeds, dining table, sofas…)
The restaurant itself is totally open with a light butterfly single roof. Inside different dining spaces allow framed views on the extraordinary surroundings.
Some private dining areas provide unique experiences of luxury personalized service, as in the wine cellar, at the Chefs Table nearby the kitchen and in the secluded ‘Cocoon’ dining room stepping down into the white sand of the beach.
Down below the Restaurant area, the swimming pool is facing the sea and located… in the river.
This will be an unforgettable experience: swimming in clear water but still being in the mangrove river with a view on the sea.
As with all the different areas of the resort the Spa is dominated by its special landscape: the mangrove. This is surely the most surprising and unexpected natural setting.
Once more the Spa experience is unique, with the extremely close contact with the natural surrounding.
Wooden bridges lead you from the entry to the Spa reception above.
Treatment pavilions and walkways are built on stilts to be higher than the ground hidden by the vegetation. All pavilions have specific views and locations to get frame views to the sea.
The architecture of the villa carries through the same philosophy as all the buildings of the resort to achieve both a unique built environment and enhance the amazing natural setting.
Each villa is designed as a timber frame structure, located sensitively within the natural slope of the dunes for the best views to the sea and the best integration of the built elements into the site. The butterfly roofs give lightness to the overall, it opens the front of the buildings towards the sea, and creates a shaded area at the front with its pool and sundecks.
The main idea of the design of the buildings is to reduce as much as possible the air-conditioned space and to privilege natural ventilation, to live with the nature but in a luxurious way. This means that only the bedroom unit is air-conditioned. All other spaces like the bathroom and the living area are completely open to the air with natural ventilation.
The residential villas are created as pavilions with separate bedroom and living room buildings. The buildings are then connected by terraces and pathways. All the villas have a large private swimming pool and a plunge pool.”

Binh Chau hot springs
One of the most spectacular places in the country - Binh Chau Commune – can be reached by traveling some 150km from HCMC over rocky roads.

Situated in the mountains of southeastern Vietnam, the area is rich with forests and hot springs.
Vietnam’s tourism record indicates there are 70 visible thermal springs in the area forming a huge hot pot with valuable water and sedimentary mud and Binh Chau’s hot springs have even earned world recognition as one of 65 potential areas for sustainable eco-tourism development among 47 countries worldwide.
Legend describes the thermal springs as a hot water pot that the Vietnamese “Goddess of Boiling Water” spilled into the place out of anger, a story that stretches past beyond the footsteps created by visitors.
Even though the ride to Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province where Binh Chau Commune is located is long, the marvelous hot water pot of Saigon-Binh Chau – Ho Coc Eco Tours & Beach Resort eases any muscle tension caused by the journey.
One can enjoy a hot water bath at 37 degrees Celsius in a swimming pool, a hot mud bath, a foot bath at the natural hot spring area, or a swim at a white sand beach.
You can pamper yourself with a heavenly massage after a hot bath and when you get hungry there’s that 82 degrees Celsius egg-boiling natural well … within 15 minutes you can have well-done boiled eggs. However if you prefer, there are also restaurants at the resort.
Crocodile fish feeding, river fishing, billiards, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and badminton complete the adventure at Saigon-Binh Chau-Ho Coc Eco Tours & Beach Resort, and younger visitors can visit the children’s playground.
Saigon-Binh Chau – Ho Coc Eco Tours & Beach Resort, however, is just one of the places to enjoy Binh Chau Commune’s hot spring and beaches.

Tourism of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province looks forward to 2010
On the threshold of potential advantages and challenges to the risk of lagging behind, direction and task to tourism development in the period 2006-2010 have just been formed by tourism branch of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province as follows: determinedly striving for welcoming 7.6 million visitors in 2010, therein about 360 thousand foreign visitors, turnover of VND 1,760 billion. To reach the target of double turnover at present, what will the tourism branch of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province do in coming period ?
Since 2001 and up to now, tourism activities of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province have reached prosperity and positive changes, many special subjects have been executed for the purpose of making tourism environment good. In the period 2001 – 2005, tourism operation always get effective, the planned norm is over-fulfilled; total estimated turnover reached VND 889 billion at “top ten” position in the country in 2005. Investment in tourism developed considerably within the past five years. In the period 1996-2000, there were 6 projects with the registered capital of nearly VND 600 billion. In the period 2001-2005, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province attracted 64 investment projects for tourism with the total registered capital of about VND 5,000 billion…. At present, there are 90 hotels and tourism sites, which increases 20% in comparion with the year 2001, therein there are 14 hotels and tourism sites with standards of the 3 – 4 star categories all the province. The achievement was reached thanks to directions, clear strategies of tourism development from the provincial committee of the Party and People’s Committee of the province in every period.
However, tourism of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province has not yet developed in correspondence with potentialites and advantages of the province in past years. The growth rate still resembles the style of equal advance; the growth rate in the following year is higher than the one in the previous year; the growth rate in the following period is higher than the one in the previous period. There haven’t been great advances and breakthrough in the growth rate. The reasons why it is like that are the slowly - executed master plan for tourism, no considerable investment and no special large - scale projects for tourism, lack of the wonderful types of tourism with competitive ability to attract tourists and make great advances…Many infrastructure projects for directly serving tourism was slowly executed, haven’t been satisfactory and taken effect yet as required. Besides, there are deficiency of close co-ordination among relevant agencies in tourism development; the procedures for investment in eco-tourism sites relevant to forestry land are complicated; point of departure of the provincial tourism depended on almost small businesses with limited capacity for competition…Formerly, while tourism activities were dull in other localities such as Binh Thuan, Quang Nam, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa Province soared and reached a great achievement in Vietnamese tourism activities. This caused people not to have peace of mind and worry about Ba Ria - Vung Tau tourism’s lagging behind although quantity of visitors to the province and its turnover are many times as high as the ones of the other provinces. Solutions of Ba Ria - Vung Tau tourism to attracting the high-class visitors, increasing their expenses and stay presented in coming years are better than the ones to simple increase in quantity of domestic visitors. Therefore, the increase in the large-scale investment projects and clearer policies on land and tax is necessary. Land should be transferred to investors with real financial resources and capacity for business to increase the province’s ability for competiting and attracting the high-class visitors.
On the threshold of potential advantages and challenges to the risk of lagging behind, direction and task to tourism development in the period 2006-2010 have just been formed by tourism branch of the province as follows: striving for pushing Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province for a tourism centre in the country and the area until 2010 and orienting development until 2015. To reach the goal, the tourism branch had to understand clearly socioeconomic conditions of the province for the purpose of raising quality and effect of activities on pushing investment and developing advantages of nature, ecotourism, traditional culture. Relying on that, investing in infrastructure for tourism, developing and diversifying tourism services, raising quality of facilites and effect of state management on tourism, training and developing human resources, applying science and technology in tourism, strengthening propaganda and spread, protecting natural and social environments for tourism development are required.
