Da River’s boatmen in flood season

From late May to the end of September, or the rainy season, the waterway is favoured by residents along the banks of the Da River because roads are often devastated because of floods.

People in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau, particularly in Muong Te district, compare the Da River to a water monster in the rainy season. This monster becomes crueler when thousands of boats are running on the only waterway that links Muong Lay and Muong Te.

Boatman Quang Van Keo in Pac Ma commune, Muong Te district, who has over 20 years of experience as a boatman on the Da River, said the current of the Da River has changed because of sand exploitation so even experienced boatmen like Keo are now not self-confident when conducting their boats.

Most of the boats running on the Da River are simple ones, fragile when traversing a cruel river like the Da.
